following surge protection devices are considered as Primary
protection. Electronic appliances, such as TV, VCR, Personal
Computer, etc., require Secondary protection too.
We
recommend that our members use both Primary and Secondary
surge suppression products to ensure adequate surge
protection.

device mounts in the meter socket that is located on
the home. It
MUST be installed by a representative of Otsego
Electric Cooperative, and is offered only under our
rental program. This unit is the Primary line of defense against
surges from outside the home.
It protects ONLY “white appliances”, such
as the washer, dryer, stove, refrigerator, dishwasher,
and garbage disposal unit.
Electronic appliances, such as TV, VCR, Microwave
Oven, etc., require “Secondary”
protection. |

If
the meter is located more than 25 feet from the home,
the meter base device may not be used, because the
wiring between the meter and the home is susceptible to
lightning surges. This unit is the Primary line
of defense against surges from outside the home. It
protects ONLY “white appliances”, such as the washer,
dryer, stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, and garbage
disposal unit. OEC recommends “Secondary” protection for
electronic appliances, such as TV, VCR, Microwave Oven,
etc. The Hard-Wire device is designed to be mounted at
the meter, service entry or weatherhead locations. We
recommend that only a qualified electrician install this
device. |
